LAM SOON

Cyberjaya, Selangor Client : Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn Bhd Year of completion : 2020 Award : Gold - Bomanite International Annual Awards 2021

Lam Soon is a household name in South East Asia since the 1950’s whose business activities comprise plantation/milling, refining of cooking oils to the manufacture of specialty fats, soap and detergent and oleochemicals.

This new factory is built on reclaimed marsh land. Due to extensive soil settlement observed around the area, the entrance driveway was designed as a 12” thick suspended slab of grade 30N concrete and reinforced with 2 layers of BRC DA10 to avoid differential settlement and settlement cracks. A year later, the Architect said that there are no signs of differential settlement, settlement cracks nor shrinkage cracks.

The Entrance forecourt comprises of an expansive concrete driveway and parking area. This culminates into an Oval-shaped drop off area at the front of the Office building, which features an intricate web of curved lines.

The architect said that conventional finishes like tiles, pavers or concrete stamping would have resulted in many grouted lines and awkward junctions that would detract from the overall design. Hence the Bomanite Sandscape system was selected to achieve a seamless, grout-free finish and allowed subtle contrasting colours to accentuate the web of curved bands.

The forecourt functions for both vehicles and pedestrians and thus had to be able to withstand heavy traffic loads. The smooth, " sand-blasted" texture allowed the surface to be finished flat with a non-slip surface.

A veteran and seasoned project director from another potential client who saw the project commented on how flat the floor was and enquired about laser screeds. He was surprised to learn the flatness was achieved manually.

In spite of the challenges and great difficulty, the result was as the consultants and Client had envisioned it to be for its intended use. The Client and Architect were very pleased with how the Sandscape blends beautifully with the modern looking building.
